That's awesome!! I cannot wait!! My stepdad is currently reading HD and I wasn't looking forward to lending him BoT cause it is so hard to find.

Excellent news. Thanks for the heads up.

Crap, that anonymous post was mine; didn't change the default in the browser. Like I said, thanks for the heads up.

Thanks! I lent my book out and now it is lost forever. I'll pick the e-book version up instead.

Yes! I have the ebooks now, so I will no longer have to worry about my copies falling apart or being lost on indefinite loan!

It's good to see the novels influencing the world. I've been sticking with the latest news of your novels and your interview at BookSpot Central.

I published an article to spread the word on Caine and everything else, even said I wanted a damn Hollywood series based on him.

Read it here:
http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/1289001/matthew_stover_new_star_wars_books.html?cat=9

The editor purposely indented wherever there was a book title - poorly. If you can look past that, let me know what you guys think.

What an odd thing for the editor to do.

BTW matt, enjoying CBK, and noting that its a very straightforward novel... so there's not much to "discuss"... and I'll admit I enjoyed discussing the obscure and epic writing style of Blade (for example, from the concept of the Blind god as metaphor and reality, to something as small as the idea of Kierendal as a "spider woman".)

Lots of images in Blade that were great for interpretation and discussion. With CBK I think we're all on the same page. Still enjoyable though.

Good to know there's an affordable version available. I hope not to be too annoying when I still ask: May I hope for a print-on-demand version in 2009?

MWS said...

Vik --

Thanks. I need all the press I can get, and your article is better than most.

Andreas --

Now that the books have been formatted as electronic data, there should be no impediment to a print-on-demand offering. I'm just not sure whether Ballantine/Del Rey would be managing that themselves, or licensing them to a POD house.

Rob --

Just wait. You'll see.

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the quick reply! As I understand the matter, Amazon/BookSurge just need the existing PDF file, so that the POD-version could easily be ordered from Amazon.com.

http://www.booksurgepages.com/amzn/ondemand/

It also says that Del Rey would still be free to use other POD service providers for different channels than Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html/?docId=1000213141

I know the whole thing is probably not quite as simple (concerning licenses and all that), but I'm sure there'll be a way...

So there I was in a bookstore at Purdue U and I just wanted to see if they were carrying CBK. To my great suprise they had both HD and BoT at 7.99 a pop! So I naturally picked them up. Then I wandered downstairs to the used books portion of the store and there was a brandnew copy of BoT for 7 bucks. the only blemish is that it is starting to yellow, but thats ok with me! So i picked that one up too! Who needs E-books now??

Hello. I guess this is just as good a place as any to post this: I just finished reading HD for the first time (after looking all bloody over for it for about a month before finally ordering it online) and I have to say that it was the most enjoyable read I've had in quite a long time. The writing, the characters, the plot...not much I didn't enjoy. I already have the next two Caine books on my shelf and ready to go; I just wanted to stop by and give a quick Thanks for the excellent adventure and I'm really sorry it took so long for me to find out about it.

Matt,

Any update on sales or how your holidays are going? (Health, etc?)

I just read Hereos Die, Blade of Tyshalle, and Caine Black Knife in the past three weeks. I really enjoyed them.

I saw that the kindle versions are available on Amazon.com, but I live in Japan and they have not released the kindle here yet. The versions available from ebooks.com and fictionwise.com are both "secure" versions, which means I can't read them on my OLPC (http://www.amazon.com/One-Laptop-per-Child-Give/dp/B001GB87EI/ref=tag_tdp_sv_edpp_i) with FBReader.

Anyway, thanks for the great books, I hope they are available DRM-free at some point because I don't like the idea of depending on some company to allow me to read books that I have purchased. The paper versions I have will always work regardless of what happens to the publisher, and they don't put strange stipulations on my like "you can only read this book in your living room" like how ebooks are tied to one device. When I upgrade to a new reader I want to bring my ebooks with me without asking someone to convert them or authorize a new device. (A bit of a tangent, but like Duncan Michaelson says I guess you have to stick with the paper versions...)

MWS said...

I agree. However, the economics of the situation argue against a paper reprint. So far.

Don't give up hope.

Hey guys, sorry to go off topic again, but Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor got some good praise at OF Blog of the Fallen, in a piece about "tie-in fiction". http://ofblog.blogspot.com/2008/12/reading-tie-in-fiction-outsiders.html The author (Larry) gave further compliment in a comment on Jeff Vandermeer's Blog: "Stover “owned” that SW book; it felt like some of his original fiction in feel."

Also, Pat's Fantasy Hotlist is doing a giveaway of it. I have to say: I am very much looking forward to getting my hands on it...but I'll be reading Blade of Tyshalle first.

Anyways, Happy holidays to you, Robyn and Aias

Any answers from the doctors? Hope your family is doing well. So proud of you and your success. Always suprised that you are not in movies instead of writing for them!! Take Care! Happy Holidays!

Gnaargh. I just finished Heroes Die in 2 days (after buying it because of your Big Idea piece on Whatever) and now I must find that there's no way to get my hands on a proper version of Tyshalle that might make you some money.
If it's not dead tree, it's not a book.
Will have to go for one of those 30$ used versions -.-

Damn you Stover! Why do you have to write this good?!

Anonymous said...

I won't even take "Heroes Die" off my shelf before there's a physical copy of the sequel available... ;-)

Hey Matt, you know, I just read this short story by Douglas Texter called "Primetime." It's the first story in "Writers of the Future" and there seems to be A LOT of similarities between that story and HD/ BoT. So...ya I don't know if that's plagiarism or not, but if you're not aware you should maybe check it out.

Glad I got in on the ground floor some years back with a couple paper copies of BoT.

PS: I can't help but wondering if Caine takes a shot at BoT with his "Too fucking long" comment in CBK (p.37). More generally, I wonder whether Deliann's book is meant to be BoT itself or just his telling of those events.

Mindor was a lot of fun. The Melters reminded me a lot of Xim's war droids in Daley's books. Great throwback to the good old days, thank you.

Very good news))

I wonder if we'll ever see Traitor in e-book form?

That was quite possibly my favorite NJO novel.

I have the paperback, but I would b e more than happy to pay for the e-book.

I finally got to Shadows of Mindor and I loved it, you're the most unique and original Star Wars writer.
The Debriefing chapter almost made laugh out loud... was that a personal experience?

Neal Asher's Gridlinked and Brass man. I found him to be refreshing. I think you will find similarities in the Ian Cormac character to Caine. A man who has been linked to a computer for so long he isn't sure if he shares emotions with humans any more. This thread was about new authors right?

Great news. I bought all three Caine novels from Fictionwise.

Hi Mr. Stover, I just finished Blade of Tyshalle via eBook and was starting Caine Black Knife and just looked back in from page 44.

Just had a question.

I don't know where you picked up that dual-doctorate in Badass and Fuckyeah, but would you ever consider teaching a couple semesters on them?

'Cause I'll be the front row. I don't mind getting blood sprayed on me.

Hello Mr. Stover,

I have been writing a comedy-superhero adventure series with my brother for about five years. A few years ago we had to convert them from scripts to novels and were a bit lost. I had to fly to New Zealand on business and picked up a copy of Shatterpoint for the plane ride, I am a big Star Wars fan (who isn’t?). But more importantly, I needed to learn how to write a novel after spending 2 years writing scripts.

I loved it. I was probably the only person who read it for its format instead of its story (of course the story was great!) I underlined passages, tore out pages, and devoured it from cover to cover. As soon as I landed in Auckland, I called my brother and told him to go down and pick up a copy. We really liked your style, and how you wrote your action sequences, which is critical to us because we have quite a few of them ourselves.

So, after years of work, thousands of dollars for editors and illustrators, we have beaten the odds and have been signed by a publisher who plans to put our first book out in April. But he said we needed two reviews by respected authors. We immediately thought of you.

What we are asking for is crazy, and we fully expect you to say no. But if we always played the odds, we never would have started writing a book in the first place. We hope that you might look at our site at http://rickandbobo.com, look at our cover art, excerpts and other reviews, and possibly decide that you might want to review the book. If you did, we would put your review, name and credits on the back of our cover with the other best selling author’s review.

We completely understand if this is something you can’t do, don’t have to the time to do, or just don’t want to do. In any case, we wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for your help over the past few years, and to let you know that your books were also used to educate as well as entertain.

Thank you for your time, and your writing!

James Ventrillo

Hey Matt, Long time no post.

CBK rocked my world. It stands next to my copies of Blade and HD. (Which stand right next to my copies of Barra and Co.)

Something's been on my mind for some time now: do you have any plans to release any of your previous novels as Audiobooks?

I have copies of Shatterpoint, Traitor, and SW Ep. III on my iPod. I must say that Jonathan Davis was excellent. Everytime I listen to them, though, I find myself wishing that I could listen to Caine's adventures.

Thanks for everything.
