This is AWESOME.

Really.

Those of you who can't get the NYTimes, it's an article about a couple of physicists who have hypothesized that the Higgs boson (one of the last not-yet-discovered elemental particles in the Standard Model) might be so unlikely -- or so dangerous, or whatever (I believe the phrase was "abhorred by reality") that any projects to discover it will be sabotaged by their own success.

Literally. The later success of the Higgs creates a backward ripple in time to prevent itself from happening. Hence the cancellation of the SSC in the US, and the famous "random breakdown" last year at CERN . . . for example.

They have apparently proposed a way to test this hypothesis.

They're sort of kidding, but only sort of.

And one of these guys is regarded as a founder of string theory.

And I can hardly wait.

Well, take that tachyon! You're not the only time traveling particle now, bitch.

That's amazing, but I'm still confused as to where the Vonnegut quote reference fits in?!?

Have a look at this if you have time, Matt. The co-author, Joe Gillard, has been one of my best mates since I was about nine. He has a brain the size of a planet: http://www.iop.org/EJ/article/1126-6708/2003/06/035/jhep062003035.pdf

The paper won't come up. Not that I would have understood anything if it had.

The NYT writer thought he'd be clever because the actual Vonnegut book about the theoretical non-linearity of time was Slaughterhouse-5.

He jumped sideways to The Sirens of Titan to throw a teleological spanner in the ontological works.

Oh God - he's outdone me.

Yeah, the article is a PDF. Try going to this link n' clicking Full Text:

... it's phenomenal. Don't try and understand it. Just revel in the beauty of equations that won't fit on a page!

Very cool.

Will be using "Look, we did Suceeced---Universe just time-travelled 'cause that wasn't meant to be" argumentation whenever possible from now on (once this week so far).

Different topic, everybody check out (haven't seen it posted here before):

The TVtropes.org entry on The Acts of Caine.

Seems a product of Love. Even spoilers are hidden.

Had to smile throughout the article.

A Terminator-esque particle that tries to stop itself from being created?

Awesome.
